The Importance of Mapping Your Path
When I was a police sergeant and trainer, one of the first things I taught rookies was to look at a map upon being dispatched to a call. This was mostly during the 1980s and 1990s when GPS was not so common, compact, and affordable. I always emphasized using a map first. The procedure I shared consisted of getting the call on the police radio, looking it up on the map, and writing down a few steps on a small piece of paper that could be clipped to the dashboard as a reminder.
These reminder steps could include the names of the roads, like Jimmy Carter Blvd and Singleton Rd, along with turns like left or right. You would be surprised at how much stress this eliminated for these rookies, who were already en route to stressful situations such as domestic disputes, robberies, homicides, fights, or burglaries. Many of the other rookies on the same shift, not trained in my method of “mapping,” would invariably get lost and arrive at the location of the call feeling stressed out.
The Power of Preparation
Many of my rookies became so successful at mapping things out that they applied my method to other parts of their police work. This led to promotions to higher ranks. One of them even went on to become police chief. It was a testament to how preparation and a clear path can lead to success.
A Different Kind of Map
The best map I’ve ever had doesn’t come on a GPS. It’s The Bible. Its passages of wisdom guide me, just like the streets on my earthly map. They led me back to school, where I gained a Bachelor’s in Psychology and a Master’s in Professional Counseling. This journey allowed me to specialize in Christian counseling after my retirement from the police department. I worked as an assistant director of six counseling clinics and then as a Christian counselor for people in need from countless countries.
Finding Your Direction
Have you got a call, dream, or vision? I encourage you to look at your map: The Bible. Write down the steps to get to your destination. The author of your map, if it’s a Bible, will guide you better than any man-made device.
Trusting the Journey
Life can feel overwhelming at times. It’s easy to get lost in the chaos. But remember, just as I taught my rookies, having a clear plan can make all the difference. When you take the time to consult your map, you can navigate through life’s challenges with confidence.
Embracing Faith-Based Wisdom
As you embark on your journey, embrace the wisdom found in scripture. It’s not just a book; it’s a guide that offers comfort and direction. When you face obstacles, turn to these passages for strength. They can illuminate your path and help you find peace amid the storms of life.
Practical Steps for Your Journey
Identify Your Destination: What is it you want to achieve? Write it down.
Consult Your Map: Spend time in The Bible. Reflect on the passages that resonate with you.
Create a Plan: Just like I taught my rookies, jot down the steps you need to take. Keep it simple and clear.
Stay Flexible: Life is unpredictable. Be open to adjusting your route as needed.
Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to others for guidance. Whether it’s friends, family, or a counselor, support can make your journey easier.
Conclusion: Your Journey Awaits
Tune in to God’s map now. It will help you get to where you should be going without getting lost unnecessarily. Remember, every step you take is part of your unique journey. Embrace it with faith and confidence.
