We all grieve from time to time. Grief is a complex and emotional response to loss. But “complex” doesn’t mean “impossible to overcome.” It simply means that we can approach it from different angles—physical, emotional, and even playful. The good news is: you don’t have to stay stuck in grief forever. With a little creativity, you can begin to move forward and rediscover joy.
Embracing the Journey of Grief
One of my favorite tools is what I call cinema therapy. This involves deliberately choosing films or shows that make you laugh, smile, or even inspire you. Watching a silly comedy, a feel-good musical, or even an action-packed adventure can shift your emotional state in powerful ways. And please—don’t feel guilty about it. The world is serious enough, and laughter truly is medicine for the soul.
Leveling Up Your Cinema Therapy
Want to level up your cinema therapy? Try watching your movie while on a treadmill, exercise bike, or even stretching on a yoga mat. Physical activity boosts endorphins, and when you combine it with laughter, you’re doubling the dose of feel-good medicine. Think of it as a workout for both body and spirit.
More Fun Activities to Ease Grief
But cinema therapy isn’t the only option. Here are a few more fun activities to help ease the weight of grief:
Music Breaks: Build a playlist of songs that lift your spirit. Dance around the room, sing off-key, or simply let the rhythm remind you that life continues to have energy and beauty.
Creative Journaling: Write a short story, a silly poem, or even a comic strip about your day. The goal isn’t to be “good”—it’s to express, release, and lighten your emotional load.
Outdoor Micro-Adventures: Take a short walk in a park, count how many different birds you hear, or snap photos of clouds in funny shapes. Little doses of nature help remind us that life moves forward.
Cooking Experiments: Try a brand-new recipe—bonus points if it’s colorful or unusual. Invite a friend or family member to taste-test. Sharing food creates laughter, bonding, and comfort.
Mini Acts of Kindness: Do something playful for someone else—a funny card, a small surprise, or even a compliment. Helping others shifts your focus outward and often brings unexpected joy back to you.
Honoring Your Journey
Grief is real, but so is healing. By giving yourself permission to laugh, move, and explore life in new ways, you honor the person or thing you lost while also honoring yourself. You’re still here, and you deserve to keep living fully.
Finding Joy Amidst Grief
So grab that comedy, queue up that playlist, or lace up those sneakers. Healing doesn’t have to be solemn—it can be filled with laughter, movement, and creative sparks. Remember, it’s okay to seek joy even in the midst of sorrow. Embrace the moments that make you smile, and let them guide you toward healing.
Stay strong,
Robert Betancourt
